National History Day in Kentucky is the ultimate project-based learning experience!

National History Day in Kentucky (NHDKY) is an annual educational program and learning competition for students in grades 4-12. Driven by curiosity, imagination, and innovation, NHDKY empowers students to express themselves through a historical topic they are passionate about in one of five different project categories. This hands-on experience focuses on the autonomy and creativity of each student as they research a topic of their choice through the lens of an annual theme, interpret its relevancy both in its context and to our lives today, and display what they learned through a variety of platforms. The judging portion of the competition gives students the opportunity to serve as advocates of their work, which offers real-world experience in building confidence and conviction. Each year, the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) creates a coalition of judges across the state to be ambassadors of history in this rewarding student experience that benefits all, inside and outside the classroom. Students in grades 6-12 that advance past both Regional and State contests are invited to attend National History Day's National contest in College Park, MD, each June. For questions or more information, please contact your NHDKY coordinator.

What Can I Expect at an NHDKy Contest?

Refer to the main pages for generalized contest information. Keep an eye on your email for specific updates and materials regarding your regional contest. If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to the NHDKy coordinator.

Please note that the virtual contest is rather unusual in that students do not actively participate in virtually showcasing or interviewing with their projects; this is for safety reasons. However, all participants are invited to attend the award ceremony after judging has concluded.
